Shelly Beach Cafe
Positioned within the Ballina Coastal Reserve on Nyangbul Bundjalung Country, Shelly Beach Café occupies a site between the reserve landscape and the Pacific Ocean beyond.
Designed as a low horizontal pavilion, the building sits lightly within its coastal setting, establishing a direct relationship between the building, the coastline and the ocean.
Delivering the project required careful management of a highly sensitive coastal environment, where environmental controls, access constraints and stakeholder requirements influenced every stage of construction.
The completed building allows the coastline, vegetation and ocean beyond to remain the defining elements of the experience.
“The restraint and simplicity of the architecture demanded an equally disciplined construction approach. Jacob executed the work with considerable care, particularly in the relationship between building, landscape and coastal environment. Throughout delivery, communication remained direct and collaborative, and the original architectural intent was maintained at every stage.”
